Without a decent read I'll pick up some sci-fi or a Chandler, and that hasn't been working lately...Subutex is like a fix I've been dying for.. maybe inspire me to look harder fr less then dribble...Book two is as punk in spirit and free wheeling in execution as the first, or at least it first seems that way. To recap, in the first part, Vernon Subutex was forced to close his record store and his benefactor and long-time friend Alex Bleach died from an overdose leaving a set of tapes in which he (Bleach) interviewed himself. Despentes could cut back on the hipper-than-hipness when writing her younger characters (the novels focus on a middle-aged band of misfits, who work to her strengths), and those run-on clauses are a little vexing (p’haps yr translator is to blame), but the energy and wit in this novel are exactly the sort of thing lacking in our land of Brittania at the mo.
Number 2 is more of a decent-sized snack. The writing is accomplished and authentic as far as I can tell, and this carried me through the somewhat unpalatable storyline.I had two big takeaways from Subutex 2. Despentes is a sharp social critic, often funny and never laborious, all of which can cloud her artistry and also the (could it be) hippy optimism brewing in the background.
